I know when our children were growing up it was so important to make eye contact with them when I was giving instruction or counsel. It is tempting to holler across the room or shout out at a child. But the best teaching method I have found is to stop what you are doing and get close to the child and get them to look into your eyes and gently get their undivided attention and then proceed with your correction or instruction. I find that you are much calmer and in control if you are looking into the child’s face versus their backs. It is difficult sometimes to take the time to discipline correctly but I promise the time is so worth it in the end. The relationship with the child will be so much sweeter and brighter. And your children will learn the value of looking a person in the face when being spoken to as they mature and grow up. I know our children are young adults and they still want us to look at them in their eyes when they are talking to us and wanting to share what is on their hearts. Precious moments to remember…….

Hi Teresa, I really do agree with you. I made a big effort to do this and yes it has paid off heaps!
Even our precious son who is autistic tries so hard to look people in the eye when he is talking which is so hard for him!
It’s so important to him that if we look away when he is speaking he loving says but “I am still talking mama”!

This is something I also know, but it’s such a great reminder … because sometimes it’s just so easy, especially when you are doing a hundreds things all at once to actually STOP and have the heart of your child by correcting or instructing in a godly and loving way!
Our girls know this and make wonderful eye contact when people are speaking to them, and our Autistic son, it’s very difficult for him to make eye contact, but he tries bless his little heart!!
